March 1883: Dunfermline Amateur Orchestra – A Season’s Training by Mr W. H. Cole of Glasgow, Financed by Mr Andrew Carnegie, of New York

An article on page four of The Glasgow Herald, on Thursday the 22nd of March, 1883, reads:

 

“DUNFERMLINE. – ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. – The Dunfermline Amateur Orchestra gave a

concert of orchestral and vocal music last night in St Margaret’s Hall before a large audience.

Through the munificence of Mr Carnegie, of New York, the orchestra had been placed in such a

position financially as to allow of a thorough season’s training at the hands of Mr W. H. Cole, of

Glasgow. As the result the programme last night was far in advance of anything ever placed

before a Dunfermline audience. It included selections from Mendelssohn, Handel, Gounod,

Haydn, and Beethoven. Mr Cole conducted, and Mr D. A. Harley, late of Glasgow, presided at

the organ. The vocal part of the programme was excellently sustained by Miss Torrance, Kirkcaldy;

and Messrs Summers, Glasgow, and Moodie, Dunfermline.”
