August 1854: Photography – Miss Dessurne at Lynedoch Place

An article on page five of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 28th of August, 1854, reads:

Photography. – We have much pleasure in calling the attention of the public to the photographic

portraits produced by Miss Dessurne, at Lynedoch Place, and which are in many respects deserving

of high commendation. Miss Dessurne succeeds in making excellent sun-pictures; but the portraits,

when finished with oil colours, possess all the qualities of good pencil work, while the details of the

photographic image is no ways interfered with. In the specimens we have seen of this lady’s work

great attention has been paid to the position of the sitter, while the exact colours of the dress worn

are always copied, and with ordinary care the portraits so finished are no more liable to lose their

brilliancy than any high class historical painting.”
