The Golden Age of Glasgow’s Art Trade: September 1861 – John and James Morrison – The Crown Sale Halls, 102 Renfield Street
In an advertisement on page eight of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 9th of September, 1861, John and James Morrison informed readers and potential customers that:
“the Extensive Public Sale Halls which have been building for them during the last two years are now completed.
THE CROWN SALE HALLS,
102 RENFIELD STREET, GLASGOW,
Are the largest Sale Rooms out of London, and have been
erected by the Proprietors to meet the increasing requirements
of their trade.
PUBLIC SALES of HOUSE FURNITURE will take place therein
every alternate Monday; and the Halls are Open Daily for the
reception of all Goods that may be forwarded.
In conjunction with the Sale Halls, we have also erected well-lighted
Dry Stores for House Furniture and other Articles, where Parties can
have their Effects stored by the Month or Year, on Moderate Terms.
Our business in all its branches, carried on by us, as heretofore, in our
long-established Sale-Rooms, 11 Virginia Street.
JOHN & JAMES MORRISON,
AUCTIONEERS AND VALUATORS,
11 VIRGINIA STREET, GLASGOW.”
It is worth noting that the street number is 102 in 1861, whereas it
was advertised as 80 Renfield Street, in December 1860. Advertisements
for the 102 address are also in some August newspapers.
