January 1927: Death of Mr Alfred Heap – Glasgow Teacher of Music

A short notice on page nine of The Scotsman, on Saturday the 22nd of January, 1927, reads:

“DEATH OF GLASGOW TEACHER OF MUSIC.—The death has occurred of Mr Alfred Heap,

a well-known teacher of music in the Glasgow Athenaeum School of Music, in his seventy-

fifth year. A native of Lanarkshire [sic], he was one of the original members of the School of

Music staff at its formation in the year 1890. Only two of the original members now survive.

Among the many students who were trained under him are several well-known city musicians.

Mr Heap went from Coldstream to take up the position of organist in Pollokshields Parish

Church, a post he held for forty-three years, and from which he retired only about three years

ago.”

Alfred Heap was in fact a native of Lancashire, England, and not Lanarkshire, Scotland.
