October 1846: Glasgow and West of Scotland Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts – Drawing of Prizes – Pictures by John Graham Gilbert and Robert McInnes
The draw took place in the Monteith Rooms, Buchanan Street, on the afternoon of Saturday the
31st of October, 1846. The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 2nd of November, page two, provides
a detailed account of the event. Due to the general mercantile depression, the organisation was unable
to attract the support of many of their usual subscribers in Glasgow and elsewhere.
There is a reference to Robert McInnes’s Italian Shepherds, and some regret that the proof of
the plate was not quite ready. The prize draw took place, and included:
“Number 24. Head of a Gypsy Girl, by J. G. Gilbert, R.S.A.P., and W.S.A., Glasgow” which was won
by “Alfred Meyniac, Tournon, France, £30”.
and
“Number 575. The Goat-herd Boy, by Robert McInnes, London, – Wm. Geddes, Elmwood,
Little Govan, £31: 10s”.
