Madame Grisi, Grand Concert, City Hall, 25th February 1857
On the Wednesday the 18th of February, 1857, The Glasgow Herald has an advertisement for a
Grand Concert at the City Hall. Taking place on Wednesday, the 25th of February, the performers
included Madame Grisi, Madame Amedei, Signor Lorini, Signor Kinni, and Herr Formes. The conductor
was Signor Stanzieri. Ticket prices ranged from five shillings and sixpence for numbered reserved seats,
to family tickets at fourteen shillings, which covered three people, to one shilling for the West Gallery
and Promenade.
An advertisement on page one, on the 25th has some changes in the performers, with the addition of
Madlle. Bedlazek, Mons. Gassier, and Mr. Tennant. Signor Kinni and Signor Lorini are no longer on
the list. Readers were informed that tickets and programmes were available at John Muir Wood and Co.,
42 Buchanan Street. Under the heading ‘Popular Amusements’, on page five in the same issue, the
Herald commented:
“City Hall – To-night the principal artists of the opera are to give a concert in the City Hall. On this
occasion, Herr Formes is to sing Shield’s famous song “The Wolf”. This, as well as other parts of the
programme, ought to draw a good house. We have space for further remark.”
