Proposal for a Print of the Reverend Dr. Ritchie, D.D. (1758-1830), Painting and Subscriptions, at Mr. Finlay’s, Trongate, Glasgow

The advertisement in the Glasgow Herald reads:
“PROPOSALS FOR PUBLISHING, BY SUBSCRIPTION, A Print, OF THE REVEREND DR. RITCHIE, D.D. Professor of Divinity in the University of Edinburgh, and one of the Ministers of the High Church, From a PICTURE by G. R. G. BAIRD. To be engraved in the best style of Mezzotinto Engraving, by one of the first engravers in London. The Picture to be seen at MR FINLAY’S, carver and gilder, Trongate, where subscriptions will be received.”
William Ritchie studied Divinity at the University of Glasgow, and was ordained by the Church of Scotland. In 1801, he was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Another portrait, an etching by John Sheriff, dated 1827, is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
To date, an example of the print after Baird’s painting, or the original painting have been located. The artist has not been identified.
