Charles A. Oakley (1900-93)

Charles Allan Oakley was born in Plymouth, and followed his father’s wishes by beginning an apprenticeship in Naval Architecture at John Brown and Company Ltd. at Clydebank, when he was sixteen. Subsequently, he won a scholarship to the University of Glasgow, and graduated BSc. in 1923. While he was a student he drew and wrote for the student magazine. He wrote several books related to Glasgow. The first edition of The Second City: A History of Glasgow was published in 1946; Dear Old Glasgow Town, in 1974; and Our Illustrious Forebears, in 1984.
