February 1880: George Cranston, Junior, Chemist, Sydney Street and The Philosophical Society of Glasgow
On pages 411-412 of the Proceedings of The Philosophical Society of Glasgow, Volume 12, 1879-1880, 1881, is the following:
“February 18, 1880.
The Philosophical Society of Glasgow met this evening, at eight
o’clock, in the West Hall of the Upper Galleries, Corporation
Buildings, Sauchiehall Street. Dr. Andw. Fergus, President, in
the Chair.
The Minutes of the last Meeting of the Society having been
printed in the notice calling this Meeting. were held as read,
and were confirmed and signed by the Chairman.
The following were proposed as Members of the Society, viz: –
…
Mr. George Cranston, Jun., Chemist, Sydney Street. Recommended
by Mr. Robert R. Tatlock, Mr. David Storer, and Mr. David Thomson,
F. R. I. B. A.”
George is in the List of Members, on page 445 of the publication. He became a member in 1880, and his
address was 91 Sauchiehall Street. In the 1880-81 Glasgow Post Office Directory, page 742, George’s
brother, Stuart, is listed at 91.
Sydney Street is on page 757 of the Directory. George Cranston’s name is not listed, but there is the firm,
David Storer and Sons, oil merchants and refiners. David Storer was one of George’s supporters.
