May 1912: Closure of the Possilpark Institute
A short article, on page ten of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 6th of May, 1912, reads:
“After having been in existence for 37 years, Possilpark Institute was closed on Saturday.
Founded in 1875 as a reading-room, it was first housed in a small building in Mansion
Street, and afterwards removed to Saracen Street, while a number of years ago the present
institute and hall were built and leased from Mr Taylor, builder. With the near completion
of the new Corporation library the necessity for the institute is no longer felt, and the
directors decided to close it.”
