November 1855: the Tontine Reading Rooms
An article on page four of The Glasgow Herald, on Friday the 9th of November, 1855, reads:
“Tontine Reading Rooms: – It will be observed from an advertisement that the subscription
book of these rooms for the ensuing year is now open, and we trust that our east end residenters
will not neglect to give these Reading Rooms the patronage which they deserve. They have recently
been tastefully fitted up; the telegraphic news has been introduced, the supply of periodical
literature is abundant, and altogether the Old Tontine affords superior accommodation for perusing
the news of the day. The east-enders would rue it sorely should they allow this fine institution to go
down.”
The advertisement is on the front page of the paper.
