An Editorial Diary, November 1948: “No ‘Utopia’ Yet”
‘AN EDITORIAL DIARY’, on page two of The Glasgow Herald, on Saturday the 27th of November, 1948, includes:
“No ‘Utopia’ Yet
Austerity is preventing the production of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera ‘Utopia Limited’ by Glasgow Orpheus Club.
It was announced as the club’s next production in March of 1949, but costumes cannot be had or made, so there will be
no ‘Utopia’ next year.
The club will therefore produce ‘The Yeoman of the Guard,’ in aid of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Fund. Their
previous production of this opera was in 1941, just after the Clydebank blitz, and performances had to begin at six
o’clock so that the theatre could close early.”
