April 1919: Miss Bertha J. Waddell – “Promising Soloist”

A short article in the “This Morning’s Gossip” section, on page seven of the Daily Record and Mail, on Wednesday the 30th of April,

1919, reads:

“Promising Soloist.

Miss Bertha J. Waddell, winner of the junior solo competition at the Scottish Choral Festival,

is the daughter of Mr. Jeffrey Waddell, architect and archaeologist, Glasgow and Uddingston.

She was the youngest of the twenty-five competitors, being only eleven and a half years of age,

and the adjudicator (Mr. John Graham) predicted for her a promising future.”

The article includes a photograph of Bertha. The Festival was, in fact, the 9th Glasgow Musical

(Competitive) Festival, which was held in the St.Andrew’s Hall. Please see the other entry, for

more information.
