August 1846: Grand Italian Opera at the Theatre-Royal, Dunlop Street
A short article on page two of the Glasgow Courier, on Tuesday the 25th of August, 1846, reads:
“GRAND ITALIAN OPERA.
It will be observed that the greatest era in the musical history of Glasgow, that of a complete opera company,
with band and chorus, is shortly to take place at the Theatre-Royal, Dunlop Street. When the transcendent merits
of the different artistes are taken into consideration, we may confidently anticipate a treat of the very highest order.
In the galaxy of stars which are to illumine for a brief night or two the musical horizon of the Western metropolis
we observe the name of Madame Castallan, the only rival to Grisi that has yet appeared—Mademoiselle Corbari, the
newest, and one of the brightest constellations of the London opera—Signor Marras, a vocalist who unites the taste
and faculty of Rubini in rubato passages with the passionate intensity of Moriani in the delivery of cantabile motives—
Signor Fornasari, who, with the humour of Lablanche, is entitled to succeed Tamburini as a dramatic singer, together
with such names as Signor Ciabatta, Signor Orsini, &c.”
