August 1855: Discontinuance of Street Bands
A short article on page five of The Glasgow Herald, on Wednesday the 29th of August, 1855, reads:
“Discontinuance of Street Bands. – We understand that the Magistrates came to a resolution yesterday
to order the discontinuance of the playing of music bands on the streets in future, excepting in the
morning, when they may be accompanying excursionists to railway or steamer, and even this is only
allowed upon the permission of Captain Smart having been previously obtained.”
