August 1873: The Jubilee Singers at Castle Wemyss

A short article, on page three of The Dundee Courier & Argus (Dundee Courier, in The British Newspaper Archive), on Monday

the 18th of August, reads:

“THE JUBILEE SINGERS.

Our Glasgow correspondent telegraphs : —On Saturday afternoon, by invitations of Mr and Mrs John Burns, a

numerous company assembled at Castle Wemyss to hear the jubilee singers from America, who, in front of the

castle, sang a number of their plaintive melodies to the great delight of the audience. The party included the Earl

of Shaftesbury and family, who for a month past have been staying at Castle Wemyss, and yachting in the Hebrides

with Mr Burns and family. Lord Shaftesbury introduced the singers in a short but effective address, explaining and

commending the object of their mission.”
