Bazaar in Aid of the Fugitive Slaves: Music at the Anti-Slavery Bazaar, October 1853

A small advertisement on the front page of The Glasgow Herald, on Friday the 21st of October, 1853, reads:

“BAZAAR IN AID OF THE FUGITIVE SLAVES.

THE GLASGOW FEMALE NEW ASSOCIATION

FOR THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY will hold

a BAZAAR in the MERCHANTS’ HALL, HUTCHESON

STREET, on TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, and THURSDAY,

the 25th, 26th, and 27th instant. The Hall will be

beautifully decorated, and an excellent band in attendance.”

On page five of  the Herald, on Friday the 28th of October, is the following short notice:

Anti-Slavery Bazaar.— This bazaar opened on Tuesday, and although the weather was anything

but favourable, the stalls were pretty well patronized. An orchestra was in attendance, and discoursed

excellent music throughout the proceedings. The weather on Wednesday, unfortunately, was if possible

still more boisterous; and we fear that the sales would not come up to the amount which an object so

laudable might otherwise have reasonably been expected to draw.”
