December 1856: “The City Waits” – Glasgow’s Blind Street Musicians
A short article on page five of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 22nd of December, 1856, reads:
” ‘The City Waits‘. – We beg to call public attention to the claims of those poor blind musicians, who,
at this season, perambulate the principal streets of the town, making night joyous with their melodious
strains. At the same time we are requested to state, on behalf of ‘the waits,’ that no person has authority
to receive money on their account, unless they produce the Lord Provost’s card, which is the proper
voucher.”
