December 1899: Labour Party Bal Masque in Glasgow

An article on page eight of The Scotsman, on Saturday the 16th of December, 1899, reads:

“LABOUR PARTY BAL MASQUE IN GLASGOW. – The members of the Independent Labour

party in Glasgow last night held a bal masque in the City Hall. The floor of the large hall was

crowded with dancers in fancy dress, and the spectacle was an exceedingly pretty one. Among

the company was Mr J. Keir Hardie, attired as a Boer, and the other dancers included courtiers

of every period, comic-policemen, Weary Willies, Greek slaves, and every variety of character

common to such functions. A feature of the evening was the picturesque dancing of Socialist

Sunday school children.”
