December 1948: Review of the Poetry Recital, by the Apollo Society, in the McLellan Galleries, Sauchiehall Street, with Angus Morrison, Laurier Lister, and Joyce Grenfell

A review on page three of The Glasgow Herald, on Wednesday the 15th of December, 1948, reads:

POETRY RECITAL

The recital of poetry and music by the Apollo Society in the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow, last night

was a professional and highly skilled version of the sort of entertainment which is generally painful

if given, as it often is, by amateurs. A high finish in performance, combined with a careful grouping of

the pieces chosen so as to maintain a unity of mood, made a compact and generally satisfying programme,

which did not, however, altogether silence doubts whether lyrical and intimate poetry really suits

the concert hall.

Angus Morrison’s crisp playing of Bach, Brahms, Debussy, and Moussorgsky harmonised well with

the admirable reading of Laurier Lister and Joyce Grenfell. The latter, as might be expected, was at

her best in the more satirical portraits. Mr Lister’s reading of T. S. Eliot’s ‘Journey of the Magi’ was

memorable.”
