February 1855: Mr John Muir Wood has Arranged a Second Season of Italian Opera, in the Theatre Royal, Dunlop Street

An advertisement on the front page of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 26th of February, 1855, informed readers that

John Muir Wood had arranged a second season of  the “GLASGOW ITALIAN OPERA”.

 

Opening on Monday the 5th of March, at the Theatre Royal, Dunlop Street, the operas in the first week of the season were:

Lucrezia Borgia, Norma, Lucia, and Fidelio.

 

The performers were the Prime Donne: Madame Caradori, Madame Rudersdorf, and Mademoiselle Sedlatzek; Miss Huddart,

Contralto; Tenori: Herr Reichardt, Signor Santi, and Signor Benedetti; Baritoni: Herr Hubert Formes, Signor Pierini, and Signor

Fortini; and Bassi: Mons. Zelger, Signor Gregorio, and Herr Formes. The conductors were: Signor Orsini and Herr Anschuetz.

 

In addition to the repertoire of the last season, the operas of Robert Le Diable, Lucia, Puritani, Semiramide, and Masaniello would

be given. Performances would take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

 

The advertisement includes the ticket prices for subscribers and non-subscribers. For the former, these ranged from six shillings

in the dress circle, to one shilling for the upper gallery. For the latter, they ranged from eight shillings for the dress circle, to one

shilling for the upper gallery.

 

Private boxes were the same prices for subscribers and non-subscribers.
