February 1924: Death of a Glasgow Organist – Mr David A. Harley
An article on page five of The Glasgow Herald, on Tuesday the 26th of February, 1924, reads:
“DEATH OF A GLASGOW ORGANIST
By the death of Mr David A. Harley, formerly organist of Berkeley Street United Free Church,
Glasgow, which occurred in a nursing home last week, a well-known and highly respected
Glasgow musician has passed away. Mr Harley received his first professional appointment
many years ago from Dunfermline Abbey, but returned to Glasgow a few years afterwards to
become the first organist of Sydney Place Church, Dennistoun, where he remained for a
considerable number of years. He was subsequently appointed organist of Berkeley Street
United Free Church, a position which he held until his retirement several years ago. He was
also a highly successful teacher of music in all its branches, and held a position on the
teaching staff of Glasgow Athenaeum School of Music.”
