February 1937: Life and Music in Canada – Lecture-Recital by Sir Hugh Roberton – the Closing Pleasant Sunday Evening of the Glasgow Temperance Crusaders’ Winter Session

An article on page eight of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 1st of March, 1937, reads:

LIFE AND MUSIC IN CANADA

The closing Pleasant Sunday Evening of the Glasgow Temperance Crusaders’ winter session

was held last night in St Andrew’s Hall. Sir Robert Wilson presided, and the programme

consisted of a lecture-recital by Sir Hugh Roberton, who was assisted by Miss Jean Hastings

and Miss Annie Tait, vocalists.

Sir Hugh told in racy manner of his experiences on visits to Canada, where he acted as an

adjudicator at music festivals, and he praised highly the cultural enthusiasm in that country,

which, he said, had greatly improved the musical standard in the 11 years since he was first

invited to visit Canada as an adjudicator.

Solos and duets were sung by Miss Hastings and Miss Tait, and Mr A. J. Gourlay was the

organist and accompanist.”
