January 1900: 5th Concert of the Season, in Kyle Street Industrial Shelter

An article on page six of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 8th of January, 1900, reads:

“On Saturday evening the fifth concert of the season was given in Kyle Street Industrial Shelter

by some members of Free St Stephen’s Church choir and friends. The Rev. Hugh Ross presided,

supported by Messrs J. Rutherfurd and J. T. Strang. Several songs were rendered by Misses Coghill,

Fyfe, Samuel, and Wilkie, and Mr Smith. Instrumental and vocal trios by Misses Gillespie and Scobie

and Mr McKenzie were a decided success. Mrs Kerr’s readings were well received. Mr Cairns’s violin

solos were rendered with rare taste and feeling, and Mr Philips’s abilities as a comic entertainer

provoked hearty laughter from an appreciative audience. Miss Gillespie also acted as accompanist

during the evening.”
