June 1930: Scottish Stations of the B.B.C. to Broadcast the “Phantasie in E Minor”, by James Friskin

An article on page six of the Edinburgh Evening News, under “RADIO NOTES”, on Monday the 9th

of June, 1930, reads:

New York Scots Composer.

In one of the new series of chamber music concerts which the Scottish stations of the B.B.C. are

running in order to feature the work of contemporary Scottish composers, listeners are to hear a

Scottish work which comes from New York. It is the ‘Phantasie in E. Minor’ by James Friskin. Mr

Friskin was born in Glasgow, where he studied under Alfred Heap. In 1914 he went to New York,

where be has since lived and where he has written a considerable amount of chamber music. His

work will be played by the Kentigern Trio, who have already been heard several times by Scottish

listeners. They are the players who provide the music at the productions of the Scottish National

Theatre Society. The singer in this concert is also well known to listeners. She is Miss Kathleen

Garscadden, who was for many years on the B.B.C.’s staff in Scotland, and who still looks after a

section of the Children’s Hour work in Glasgow.”
