March 1892: City Hall Concert – Including Miss Jessie N. Maclachlan – Last of the Season
An article on page five of the Glasgow Evening News (Glasgow Evening Post, in The British Newspaper Archive),
on Monday the 14th of March, 1892, reads:
“CITY HALL CONCERT.
The closing concert of the season took place on Saturday night, when a crowded audience enjoyed the performances of
Mrs Smith, Miss Elizabeth Hunter, Miss Minnie Dowding, Mr Peter Kerr, Mr A. P. Roxburgh, reader; the Kay Family,
Miss J. N. Maclachlan, Miss Helen G. Mainds, Mr George Neil, Mr Gideon Duncan, Miss Mary McNeil, Scotch dancer;
and Mr William Crawford. In the course of the evening the president of the Union, remarked that it was 38 years since
these concerts were started, and he believed they were the only association in the country which had carried on concerts
continuously for anything like so long a time. He was happy to say the past season had been one of most successful they
had ever had. The directors had bad difficulties to contend against and some disappointments on account of the unusual
amount of illness during the past winter, but they had managed to bring before the public concert companies which, he was
sure, had given general satisfaction. As the days were now getting longer and brighter, it was natural that the people should
wish to take their enjoyments in the open air, and he considered the attendance that night was very satisfactory in view of the
fact that the football match at Ibrox had been attended by 50,000 people. In conclusion, he proposed a vote of thanks to the
ladies and gentlemen who had so generously placed their services at the directors’ disposal gratuitously that evening. This
acknowledgment was heartily made on the part of the audience.”
