Musical and Artistical Societies Listed in the 1865-1866 Post Office Glasgow Directory: The Orpheus Choir

The following is on page 113 of the Appendix in the 1865-66 Directory:

 

“THE ORPHEUS CHOIR

 

W. H. Smith, conductor; M. Shields, secretary, 3 National Bank Buildings.

 

Instituted for the study and performance of vocal concerted music, chiefly

secular.

 

The choir, during the season 1864-65, has appeared at eleven concerts, at

which were performed, Mendelssohn’s ’95th Psalm,’ the ‘Messiah,’ and

selections of Madrigals, Glees, Part-songs, &c.

 

Purcell’s opera, ‘Dido and Aeneas,’ will form the first subject of study for next

session.”
