New Music, January 1853: “We should like to hear ‘Beautiful Erin’ sung by Miss Catherine Hayes

Among the new music reviewed on page three of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 24th of January, 1853, is

Beautiful Erin, with words by Mrs Wellington Boate, and music by Stephen Glover. It was published by Robert

Cocks & Co., London.

The Herald’s reviewer commented:

” ‘Beautiful Erin’ is a very pretty song, and if sung by some leading vocalist, would speedily drive out of fashion a

host of lyrics, which have nothing but fashion to recommend them. The melody is graceful and full of feeling, and

the harmony, without showing too much science, has some pretty little bits, which lend a charm to the composition.

We should like to hear ‘Beautiful Erin’ sung by Miss Catherine Hayes.”
