September 1855: Music Education Advertisements in “The Glasgow Herald” – Miss Duncan; Mrs Rose; Mr. McFarlane; Mr. A. Hilpert; Mr. W. C. Galloway; and Mr. George Shields
In addition to Mr. Stembridge Ray, several other music and singing teachers placed advertisements in The Glasgow Herald,
on Monday the 3rd of September, 1855. All of the ads are on page two of the newspaper, and include:
MISS DUNCAN
“MISS DUNCAN begs to intimate to her Friends and the Public in Glasgow, that she intends giving instruction on the PIANO-
FORTE, with SINGING.
Miss D. has studied under the first Masters, and from her long experience in Teaching, and the high testimonials she can
offer, she feels confident of giving satisfaction to those who may honour her with their patronage. She will, therefore, be
happy to receive Pupils on the 3d September, or attend them at their own residences.

MRS. ROSE (of the Royal Academy of Music, London, and formerly pupil of Czerny) begs to intimate that she will RESUME

Elementary and Moderately Advanced Pupils.
Mr. Galloway has arranged the above method (in which the Instructions are conducted
entirely under his superintendence and direction) in order to prevent the evil effects arising
from the formation of bad habits at an early period of study, and with the view of providing a
system of Tuition that should be efficient without being unduly expensive, – the pupils
receiving instructions from Mrs. Galloway, assisted by a well-qualified Governess, and also a
regular course of Superintendent Tuition from himself.
