September 1940: Pollokshaws Burgh Band

A short article on page three of The Glasgow Herald, on Tuesday the 24th of September, 1940, reads:

Pollokshaws Burgh Band

The destination of the instruments of the Pollokshaws Burgh Band, 21 in number, which

were recently handed over to the Corporation, has not yet been decided upon, but it is

anticipated that they will be given to a military regiment associated with the city. The band

was formed about 1900, and the instruments cost over £400. After the annexation of

Pollokshaws to the city in 1912 the name was changed to Pollokshaws Silver Band. Some

years ago the band ceased to function, and the instruments were stored in the pavilion of

the Sir John Stirling Maxwell Gardens. They are at present undergoing some necessary

repairs.

Lord Provost Dollan and Councillor James MacDougall, an ex-Provost of Pollokshaws

and the sole surviving trustee, are very much interested in the final disposal of the

instruments.”
