The Death of Mr James Merrylees of Glasgow, October 1891
A short article in The Musical Herald, No. 530, May 1st, 1892, page 140, reads:
“MR. JAMES MERRYLEES of Glasgow, who died on October 31st last, learnt the Tonic Sol-fa system
from the late Mr. W. D. Read, and was conductor of the Paisley Tonic Sol-fa Institute from its
commencement until 1861. In 1867 he attended Mr. Curwen’s Euing lectures in Glasgow, and
henceforth took up the study of harmony with much interest. He did a good deal of editorial work and
composed hymn tunes and part-songs.”
