The Shilling Opera Campaign, August 1869

A notice on the front page of The Glasgow Herald, on Friday the 20th of August, 1869, reads:

“THE SHILLING OPERA CAMPAIGN.

MR. MORISON KYLE cannot refrain from thanking his

fellow citizens for their generous appreciation of his humble

efforts to merit success. He may venture to assert that he has

endeavoured to be a pioneer in the advance of Cheap and

Good Music; and injudicious opposition cannot retard his

progress, but will only increase the zeal of the public what

is right, against the ‘Patent,’ but not the potent influence of

might.

ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE.”
