“Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Journal”, May 1958, pages 257-9: ‘Glasgow Buildings – Spreull’s Land’

“The graceful, hanging staircase in Spreull’s Land, 182 Trongate, Glasgow, was built in 1784, and people still come from far and near to see it. ‘No such tenement as Spreull’s Land had ever been erected in Trongate – or, for the matter of that, in Glasgow – before, and for years its spiral, hanging “well” staircase was reckoned one of the sights of the city,’ wrote Senex in ‘Glasgow Past and Present,’ and he was echoed not so many years ago by James Cowan in his ‘From Glasgow’s Treasure Chest’.”
