Glasgow Government School of Design / Glasgow School of Art – Founded in 1845, Not in 1840

Page fourteen of The Scotsman, on Saturday the 16th of March, 1940, has a photograph

of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art building, on Renfrew Street. The

accompanying caption reads:

“ART SCHOOL CENTENARY.—The Glasgow School of Art, the centenary of which is being

celebrated to-day.”

A substantial article about the School is on page twelve of the newspaper. It provides

some history of the institution, its teachers, pupils, and directors, with reference to the

Academy founded by the Foulis brothers in the 18th century. However, 1840 is still given

as the year the School was established in Glasgow.

The article includes a brief, but fine, tribute to “PIONEER ARCHITECT”, Charles Rennie

Mackintosh.
