March 1915: “Beauty and Utility”, a Lecture by Mr Allan D. Mainds, Delivered to Members of the Glasgow Health Culture Society

A short notice on page eleven of The Glasgow Herald, on Thursday the 11th of March, 1915, reads:

“Mr Allan D. Mainds, Glasgow School of Art, last evening delivered a lecture on ‘Beauty and Utility’

to the members of the Glasgow Health Culture Society. In the course of his remarks he said that

while most people had an appreciation of the beautiful and the part that beauty played in the

evolution of the mind, it was questionable if sufficient tribute was paid to the part played by utility

in the evolution of the idea of beauty.”
