May 1854: The Colosseum, Jamaica Street – First-Class Shops and Warehouses To Let, in This Magnificent Building
An advertisement on page two of The Commonwealth (Commonwealth (Glasgow) in The
British Newspaper Archive), on Saturday the 13th of May, 1854, reads:
“THE COLOSSEUM, JAMAICA STREET.
FIRST-CLASS SHOPS AND WAREHOUSES
TO LET,
IN THIS MAGNIFICENT BUILDING.
THE SHOPS and FLATS above are exceedingly suitable for Sale and Show-rooms, for large Drapery, Clothing,
Hatting, Upholstery, Ironmongery, or other concerns for which extensive and attractive premises in a leading
thoroughfare are essential. There is not any place so certain as this to become a mart for these and kindred
branches of business, now that the spacious Hall, which forms part of the Building, is, during a great portion of the
year, to be occupied as a Fine Art Gallery on a scale hitherto unapproached in this city, under the auspices of the
Committee of Gentlemen who last season so successfully conducted the Exhibition of the Works of Modern Artists in
St. Enoch’s Hall, and that, during the rest of the year, it is designed for Bazaars, Public Meetings, Assemblies, Soirees,
&c., all of which must attract a great concourse of people to the buildings, and give the utmost publicity to the
establishments of parties securing premises there, and that too of the class most likely to become purchasers.
Apply to J. & J. NEIL, 20, St. Enoch Square.”
