October 1855: Dundee School of Design – Candidates for the Vacant Mastership – Application from Thomas Dudgeon
An article on page three of the Dundee, Perth and Cupar Advertiser, on Friday the 26th of October, 1855, relates to the
receipt of only two applications for the post of teacher at the School of Design, in Dundee.
The first was from Mr Alexander McDonald, teacher of drawing in Montrose Academy. The second was from:
“Mr Thomas Dudgeon of Glasgow, who had recently been engaged as teacher of the drawing classes in the
Andersonian Institution in that town, which were now discontinued. Among the testimonials which accompanied
Mr Dudgeon’s application was one from Professor Easton, certifying his high character as an artist and teacher of
drawing.
It was agreed that the applications should be remitted to the committee for consideration, along with any others
that may yet be lodged, and to report to a future meeting, the directors being anxious to avoid a hasty decision on
so important a matter.”
The British Newspaper Archive.
Professor Easton was John Alexander Easton, M.D., (1807-65) who held the Chair of Materia Medica at the
Andersonian. He subsequently was appointed to the Chair of Materia Medica at the University of Glasgow.
