October 1856: Art-Union of Glasgow – Loan of the Eastern Portion of the National Gallery, Edinburgh, in December
A short article, on page two of the North British Daily Mail, on Wednesday the 1st of October, 1856, reads:
“GLASGOW ART-UNION.—We understand that the directors of the National Gallery at Edinburgh, with the
sanction of the Lords of the Treasury, have agreed to favour the Art-Union of Glasgow with the loan of the
eastern portion of the building (in which the last two exhibitions of the Royal Scottish Academy were held), for
the purpose of exhibiting the works of art purchased by that society for distribution among its subscribers in
December next. This grant is, we believe, made in consideration of the offer of the honorary secretary for Edinburgh
to open the exhibition to the general public entirely free of charge.”
