October 1856: The Art Union of Glasgow – Exhibition of Prize Pictures, in One of the Royal Exchange Rooms, Manchester
A short notice, on page four of the Manchester Weekly Examiner & Times (Manchester Times, in The British
Newspaper Archive) on Saturday the 18th of October, 1856, reads:
“THE ART UNION OF GLASGOW.—There is exhibiting
in one of the Royal Exchange rooms, Ducie Place, a
large number of oil paintings, water colour drawings, and
other works of art, which form the prizes offered by the
directors of the Glasgow Art Union. Some of these, indeed a
very large proportion, are pictures of high merit, and the scheme
is so liberal and bold that it undoubtedly deserves encouragement.
We believe that the courtesy of Mr. Lomax, of the Arcade, the
recognised agent of the association in Manchester, secures to any lady
or gentleman the opportunity of seeing the collection.”
