October 1897: Albany Chambers, Charing Cross, Sauchiehall Street – “3 Superior Artists Studios”
On the front page of The Glasgow Herald, on Wednesday the 13th of October, 1897, is an
advertisement for Albany Chambers. The property, which was “fast becoming an
important Business Centre”, offered “COMMODIOUS SHOPS WITH SALOONS, HALL”
and “3 SUPERIOR ARTISTS STUDIOS”, to let.
Commencing on page 961 of the Post Office Glasgow Directory for 1898-1899, are the
entries for “ARTISTS”. These include: “Baker, Miss E. ‘Atelier,’ Albany Chambers, Charing
cross.”
On page 885 of the same directory, the entry for Albany Chambers, 534 Sauchiehall Street,
includes “Baker, Eva”. This could be a misspelling of Eve Baker’s forename.
