Pettigrew & Stephens and Copland & Lye – On Bath Street
Fortuately, I am old enough to remember the many great department stores, and wide range
of specialist shops, which lined Sauchiehall Street in the 1960s and early 1970s.
When looking at comments about online posts with photographs of the two stores,
Pettigrew & Stephens and Copland & Lye, it struck me that a significant number of people
were unaware that the prosperous businesses expanded their premises, on the south up the
slope, to Bath Street, taking up the entire site, bound by Sauchiehall Street on the north;
Wellington Street to the east; and West Campbell Street to the west.
The first photograph here shows the Pettigrew & Stephens’ extensions, with the
slope of West Campbell Street elevation leading up to Bath Street.
To the right can just be seen part of the terrace which originally extended from West
Campbell to Wellinton Streets, and was demolished to make way for the commercial
enterprises. As far as I know, my great-great grandfather’s house, which was at 140
Bath Street, and where he lived with his family, was in this terrace.
The second shows the Copland & Lye extension on to Bath Street, looking at the Wellington
Street elevation. It also shows Pettigrew & Stephens’ subsquent extensions.
