September 1934: The Welsh Pit Disaster, at Gresford Colliery, near Wrexham – “… And Women Must Weep”, an Illustration by Nan Muirhead Moffat, in ‘The Glasgow Herald’

The illustration on page ten of The Glasgow Herald, under ‘Women’s Topics’, on Wednesday

the 26th of September, 1934, is titled: ‘… And Women Must Weep’.

Its caption reads:

All events of the past few days have been overshadowed by the tragic disaster which has brought

sorrow and mourning to a Welsh township. Once again there is brought home to us the gnawing

anxiety and fear which are the constant companions of the miners’ womenfolk, and we realise how

bravely they carry on in spite of the dread that must always be in their hearts.
