The Golden Age of Glasgow’s Art Trade: March 1850 – Allan and Ferguson’s New Gallery of Ancient and Modern Art, 70 Buchanan Street

An advertisement on page two of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 18th of March,

1850, reads:

 

“NEW GALLERY OF ANCIENT AND MODERN ART,

70 BUCHANAN STREET, GLASGOW.

 

ALLAN & FERGUSON respectfully invite Inspection of

their NEW GALLERY of ART, where they have now on

View for Private Sale upwards of TWO HUNDRED

PICTURES—many of them of rare quality, comprising an

almost endless variety of subject and style, both by Ancient

and Modern Masters,—which are offered at such extremely

Moderate Prices as cannot fail to give satisfaction to purchasers.”
