The Golden Age of Sauchiehall Street: September 1910 – Master Etchers – Exhibition at T. & R. Annan & Sons
An article on page two of the Daily Record and Mail (Daily Record, in The British Newspaper Archive), on
Thursday the 29th of September, 1910, reads:
“MASTER ETCHERS.
Every year brings to etching further recognition of its rightful place among the arts.
So far as Glasgow is concerned the revival of interest in this poetry of line expressed
on copper, in this medium where suggestion and interpretation must necessarily come
before realism, has been largely due to the initiative of Messrs. T. & R. Annan & Sons,
Sauchiehall Street. Not only have they sponsored the modern Society of Twelve in the city,
but they have advocated in many an exhibition the genius of the masters of yesterday and
the masters of the centuries.
It is not for novelty but for the enjoyment of long recognised talents that the present exhibition
in the gallery of the firm is interesting. The delicate classicism and austerity of the veteran
Alphonse Legros have nearly 30 prints on the walls is eloquent demonstration. A fine opportunity
is provided of picking up a cheap Rembrandt or Meryon, while the other etchers represented include
Haden, Corot, Whistler, Zorn, Jacque, and Millet.”
