The Importance of Facts, Found in Contemporary Newspapers, Journals and Other Sources – “The Battle of Bannockburn Panorama”

The Battle of Bannockburn Panorama, which was on Sauchiehall Street, opened to the

public in 1888. The press view was held on Wednesday the 6th of June, and the public

gained admission the following day. There were 1,385 visitors.

The entertainment and the building which housed it, were commissioned by the Scottish

National Panorama Company.

A wide range of papers provide useful details about the building, the panorama

itself and the people involved. The publications include: The Glasgow Herald, the

North British Daily Mail, Glasgow Evening News, The Scotsman, The Scottish Leader,

Irvine & Fullarton Times, The Weekly News (Aberdeen), The Stirling Observer, and

The Callander Advertiser and Oban Observer, to name a few. All of the aforementioned

newspapers can be found in The British Newspaper Archive.

However, at present, two websites claim that the building opened in 1875, as a Diorama.
