August 1930: “A Portrait of Mary Stuart” – A Role for Naomi Jacob
A short notice in “THIS MORNING’S GOSSIP”, following one about The Masque Players’ production of
Sheridan’s The Critic, at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal, is on page eleven of the Daily Record and Mail (Daily
Record, in The British Newspaper Archive), on Thursday the 14th of August, 1930, and reads:
“Portrait of Mary Stuart.
Each evening ‘The Critic’ will be preceded by ‘Mary of Delight,’ a portrait of Mary Queen of Scots by
Naomi Jacob, the novelist. The period of the play is 1571, when Mary was captive in Sheffield Castle.
Mary Stuart will be played by Miss Maud Risdon, who created the part, and Miss Jacob herself is
coming from London to fill the role of Mistress Kennedy, Mary’s housekeeper.”
