August 1930: The Scottish National Players’ Tour – “The Versatile Miss Elliot Mason”
An article on page seven of the Perthshire Advertiser Incorporating The “Perthshire Courier” (Perthshire Advertiser, in
The British Newspaper Archive), on Saturday the 16th of August, 1930, reads:
“Scottish National Players’
Tour.
THE VERSATILE MISS ELLIOT MASON
The Scottish National Players are again on the road,
travelling from point to point in lorries along with
their impedimenta. The company is certain to be
warmly welcomed in all towns and districts previously
visited, as well as those which represent new ground on
this season’s tour.
As formerly the programme will consist of three one-act
plays interspersed with song and other business. The tour
is under the experienced direction of Miss Elliot Mason,
and the cast includes Miss Meg Buchanan, Mr James Gibson,
and others who enjoyed the company’s triumph during the
season at the Everyman Theatre, London. Miss Ethel Lewis will
again charm the audiences with her singing.
Recently while the Players were at the Everyman a cartoon
appeared in the leading Glasgow paper showing Miss Elliot
Mason baking pancakes for a Players’ tea party at that theatre.
She was charged with that duty by the management, because
of the reputation of the pancakes she baked for the Players in
the course of their last summer tour. That, however, is about
the least important of this versatile lady’s roles. She also, as has
been already said, directs the company, arranges the programme,
and plays leading parts. But, as she says, that is nothing out of the
way. All the members have to play many parts. None of them, however,
is trusted with the baking of pancakes.”
