August 1980: Death of Bertha Waddell, at Caldergrove House, Cambuslang, on the 17th
An obituary on page three of The Glasgow Herald, on Tuesday the 19th of August, 1980, reads:
“Death of Bertha Waddell
MISS Bertha Waddell, founder of the Glasgow-based Children’s Theatre, has died. She was 73.
The company was famed for its annual Christmas shows for children at the Citizens’ Theatre. It
performed in places as far apart as Orkney and Buckingham Palace and was the first group to
take drama into schools in Scotland.
Miss Waddell is survived by her sister Jenny, 75, who helped her to start the company in 1927. The
Children’s Theatre closed in 1968 when Miss Waddell retired.”
