December 1905: “Britain’s Biggest Playhouse” – The Glasgow Coliseum Opens To-day, Monday the 18th
A large advertisement on page twelve of The Glasgow Herald, on Monday the 18th of December, 1905,
informed readers about the opening of The Glasgow Coliseum that day.
“A FEW POINTS ABOUT ” the venue, in Eglinton Street, “being one of Moss Empires Ltd.,”
has the capacity for 4000 seated; private boxes which are miniature drawing rooms, beautifully
finished and furnished; the orchestra stalls, sumptuously carpeted, and with tip-up chairs, “equal
to the best and newest of London West-End Theatres”; and Silk Velvet tip-up chairs in the stalls,
among other fine features.
A short article regarding the theatre’s license [sic], is on page twelve of the Herald, on the 19th,
and one about the first performances is on page two of the same paper.
Among the comments:
“The opening of the hall was obviously an event of importance to the district, for so thronged
were the streets that the tramway service could only be carried on with some difficulty.”
