February 1916: Pictures at Hengler’s – Sauchiehall Street Ought to Earn the Title of “Cinema Avenue”

A short, and interesting, article on page 501 (page 71 in The British Newspaper Archive) of The Bioscope, on Thursday the

3rd of February, 1916, reads:

Pictures at Hengler’s.

On the conclusion of the circus season, Hengler’s will this year resume as a cinema, and will make the seventh house in one

street, which ought to earn for it the title of Cinema Avenue. Picture seasons at Hengler’s are usually very successful, and as

Mr. Milne has in the past given really good programmes, the reopening will be looked forward to by the many friends of the

house.”
